It’s Friday, woohoo! Happy Friday! I’m linking up once again with Eat Pray Run DC, You Signed Up for What?! and Mar on the Run for their Friday Five Linkup. This week it’s Free Friday so there’s no set theme. I have decided to blog about five things that I’ve come to love and need while I’ve been marathon training. Here are my five must have’s for marathon training besides good shoes and my Garmin:
- Nuun – I’ve been drinking it on my long runs past 8 miles and love it! It’s packed with electrolytes and has no added sugars. My favorite flavors are watermelon and fruit punch.
- Simple Hydration Water Bottle – I love these bottles! When I did my first 20 miler, I used two of them on my FlipBelt. It worked great and I had about 26 oz of nuun with me. Check out my review from last year, HERE.
- Injinji Socks – These socks have grown on me and I always seem to come back to wearing these especially on race day. I haven’t had any blisters yet. They feel nice, lightweight, and comfy.
- Gels – I’ve been using Gu while training and bought a bunch when they were on sale for .99 at REI. When I did my 20 miler I took one about every 45 minutes and ended up using 3 gels. I could’ve taken another gel but didn’t have much further to run and felt fine.
- FlipBelt – Love the FlipBelt since it carries my iPhone 6 nicely! My phone fits nice and snug and I’m able to whip out my phone easily to take pics on the run. Also, it has a key clip to clip your keys for more security. Check out my review from last year, HERE.
Those are five things I use and need for marathon training. I’ll be using them on my first marathon race coming up soon. What do you like to use when running long?
Hope you have a great weekend and be sure to check out the other blogs! 🙂
I also like Nuun. I don’t usually carry it with me for a longrun since it doesn’t go well with GUs. Too much sweetness. I use it as a hydration recovery drink.

Injinji socks were a lifesaver for me when I was running marathons. I got giant blisters in between my big toe and 2nd toe when I did my first 15 mile training run. After I switched to injinji I had no blister issues!

I still have yet to try injinji but agree with everything else! I guess one thing I would add are my wireless headphones. Love running my long runs with music!

I love my Flipbelt! At first I was sort of “meh” about it, but now it comes on pretty much every run. I need to try one of those Simple hydration bottles.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen those socks before! They remind me of the toe sock craze of the 90s. I will have to look into them. I am a nuun lover, but usually prefer coconut water for long runs over 15 miles. Great list!

Thanks Alaina! I was hesitant at first but I won a pair of injinji socks in a giveaway and have bought many more pairs afterwards.

I actually used a CamelBak on most of my long runs this summer. I liked it. It’s one of the smaller ones and has lots of storage for whatever else you wanted to carry. I haven’t had much success with a belt. I’ve never tried Nuun! I know – strange.

Love Nuun! My go-to drink on long runs, rides or races. And on super-long ones, I make a concentrated Nuun beverage (1 bottle, 3 tablets) – my secret recipe! 🙂

Nice! That is super concentrated. I might have to try it. 🙂

I have tried Nuun once, and didn’t really care for it. Maybe I should try the flavors you suggested. 🙂 I would love to try the Simple Hydration water bottle. Your list is really awesome, I need to take notes! 🙂

Thanks! Hope you try the Simple Hydration Bottle! I recommend trying the different flavors of Nuun. Nuun is usually at the big race expos and that’s where I sample the flavors. 🙂
